There have been a lot of questions asked so I am going to preemptively answer a lot of them. We have bought, restored and sold over 200 Austin Healey 3000 cars. They have ranged from project cars, gold concours show cars close to $100k or beyond, drivers and modified V8 cars so know them well. Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:
Why was the engine rebuilt at such low mileage? The previous owner had this car for over 30 years and he was more concerned about reliability and ability to drive this car anytime and even in the warmer climate in Texas. One cylinder was showing slightly lower compression, so he decided it was time for a rebuild and to also add several driving upgrades to make this a wonderful and reliable driver. We also invested some work to improve the driving of the car by going through the brakes, new wheels, tires, exhuast etc.. This car drives as good or better than most Austin Healeys on the market today regardless of price or level of restoration. Also keep in mind it is not the mileage on an old car but the years. Almost 60 years and counting.
There are other cars advertised as drivers for around the same price or a little less, why is this different? This car is more structurally sound, has a ton driving upgrades and a very strong recently rebuilt motor. Most of the cars advertised as drivers are old, tired and have poor repairs to the body and have little work done recently to mechanicals or nothing invested in upgrades. A lot of the cars that are typically priced around this car will most likely need another $15k plus of mechanical work and upgrades to be close to the driver this car is. This does not include any structural or rust repair. This is an honest car without fiberglass or bondo used to make it took pretty. There are a lot of these cars which go through a full restoration only to hide and conceal what is underneath and an engine which are just painted (not internal work) to look pretty. These typically go for a lot of money. On the other hand there are also restorers who do amazing work mechanically, structurally and cosmetically, but we are looking at thousands of hours of labor and cars more than twice as much or three times as much as this car.
I am concerned about the lower dog legs and it looks like some rust is coming through? Well as with all our cars I am going to be honest and show these imperfections. This is not rust that can be pushed through with screw driver or poke your finger through rust underneath. It is more of a cosmetic thing and can be repaired by any body shop. It has nothing to do with the structure and has been on this car for a long time, so does not need to be addressed anytime soon.
Why does the underside looks dirty or not detailed and there is some discoloration? The underside is what it is for a real and honest driver. It is solid, mostly original (with the exception of new floors) and clean. We chose not to detail it because it is a driver and we are not going to try to make something look good or different from what it is just to sell a car.
What is going on with the paint? The paint is older. When the previous owner bought the car 30 years ago the entire car was previously painted silver. He added dark red on the coves when he bought car the match the top and tonneau. The silver paint is faded a bit and now looks more like a matte finish. The car still presents really well and looks good from 10 feet away. This Austin Healey still gets a ton of attention wherever it goes.
The top looks old and tired and would you replace it? This is up to the new owner as most of our clients typically don’t driver the car with the top up anyways. It is functional and fits well but the rear window has shrunk and there are a few tears.
