Description

Panteras were built for the Ford Motor Company from 1971 to 1974 by the DeTomaso Car Company. The cars were designed at Italian car design company Ghia, by American born designer Tom Tjaarda. Ford pulled out of the Pantera production in 1974 and DeTomaso continued to build the car until the end of 1992 with a total production of only around 7000 cars. Only 150 Pantera GTS cars were were produced and this is one them.

We are excited to offer this rare 1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS. This car was built in December of 1973 and released on December 3rd of 1974. It was ultimately sold on March 17 of 1975at Heritage Lincoln Mercury of Elgin, IL to Frank Moreno of Milwaukee, WI and driven 4,500 miles. The second owner, Jim Penney of Superior, WI drove the car to 9,000 miles. The third owner of Duluth, MN purchased the car in 1987. It has been kept in its original, unrestored, survivor condition and was sold to the fourth owner at 30,000 miles in 2015. The fourth owner decided to do a sympathetic documented restoration on a original, rust free, accident free, solid car that has never been abused, or used as competition nor was it ever driven hard. The restoration was completed in 2018 and was a 2 year project.  The car was completely taken to bare metal and re-sprayed with its original colors. The only change to the car body is the front fascia was changed due to the more attractive European design instead of the big rubber American 5 mph bumper. The original bumper and all original parts that were swapped out for sensible replacement parts are included with the car and pictured in the gallery.

The car and original engine were also completely gone through mechanically by the Pantera specialists at GTM in Greer, SC GTM’s scope of the work was to disassemble the car and replace or repair everything mechanically and address any issues in the wiring that was not as good as it was when the car was delivered new. While this was never intended to be considered a concours restoration, the intention was to have it as close as they could get it to when it was delivered new.  If anything was broken then it was replaced with original parts. The only items that were changed on the car from original are as follows. Also the  work completed ,but not limited to the following:

  • The carburetor and intake were updated for better performance but the originals go with the car.
  • The Air Conditioning compressor was updated, as well as the dryer and hoes. The original York compressor goes with the car.
  • The front bumper was changed to match the European style, but the original big rubber bumper goes with the car.
  • The exhaust and headers were also changed out to the larger European style but the originals are included. It has the same look, just much better performance.
  • The heads were shaved and a slightly more aggressive cam was upgraded. There was no bore or crank work needed as the original engine was in excellent shape.
  • The rear bumpers were brought in slightly closer to the body.
  • The cooling system was upgraded with a new aluminum radiator and hoses.
  • New clutch and pressure plate.
  • Fuel tank removed and cleaned and all new fuel lines installed.
  • The carpets and headliner were replaced, but the seats are in amazing original condition.

The invoices for the work completed are pictured in the gallery.  In addition there are invoices and history from the previous owner. Furthermore, this car comes with the original tool kit, original spare, original Campagnolo magnesium wheels and original parts that were replaced or upgraded.  This car is a pleasure to drive. It runs and drivers perfect with great power and spectacular sound!  It is a one of a kind driving experience. This is a true collectible car with only 150 GTS cars produced. As Pantera values continue to rise, the GTS will always be the one to own due to their rarity. This one is especially more collectible due to its low mileage, complete ownership history, restoration completed and overall condition.
